Each LastRound pad is rated by LastObject for roughly 250 trips through the washing machine, at up to 60 °C (140 °F), in the mesh bag that ships with the set. The care instructions on the LastRound Refill page read, verbatim, "Rinse or wash after each use. Do not use bleach or harsh solvents." That is the whole official instruction set, and it is short enough to memorize. What it does not tell you is which part of it is load-bearing. Almost nobody wears out a set of rounds by washing them too often. Sets die early for a short list of avoidable reasons — heat that was never needed, bleach the instructions rule out, solvents they also rule out, and fabric softener that quietly destroys the one property you bought the pad for — and avoiding all four costs about ninety seconds of routine per week.
What the brand actually specifies, verbatim
Per LastObject's own product data, a LastRound set is seven reusable rounds of about 7 cm diameter, made from a blend of 30% cotton and 70% lyocell — lyocell being a regenerated cellulose fiber made from wood. LastObject states each pad is rated for approximately 250 wash cycles and is machine washable at up to 60 °C. The set sells for $16.00 at LastObject's US store, and the refill sells for $9.00.
The care instructions themselves, in LastObject's wording: rinse or wash after each use; do not use bleach or harsh solvents; put all rounds in the mesh bag, which is supplied with the set, and run them in your regular laundry cycle. The LastRound product data adds one instruction the refill page does not carry: "Do not use fabric softener, as it coats the fibres and reduces absorption." The refill page also carries the line "OEKO-TEX certified, machine-washable to 60°C, compostable at end of life." Worth separating those three: OEKO-TEX is a textile certification, not a composting standard, so the certification named at the front of that sentence does not stand behind the compostability claim at the end of it.
Worth noting as a documentation split rather than a product flaw: the care wording is spread across two pages. The no-bleach line appears on both, but the rinse-after-each-use line and the harsh-solvents line sit on the refill page while the fabric-softener line sits on the product page — so neither page alone carries the complete set. If the full care routine or the exact fiber split matters to you, you currently have to read both.
The myth: that a reusable pad needs to be sanitized hard
The instinct with anything reusable that touches your face is to overcorrect — boil it, bleach it, run the hottest cycle available. The evidence points the other way, and this is the single most useful thing to internalize about caring for cellulose rounds.
What has to come off a used round is sebum, makeup, and sunscreen — an oily, pigmented soil. Detergent chemistry is what shifts that soil, and enzymes are part of why: one laboratory characterization of a bacterial lipase measured 62% oil removal from soiled cotton fabric at 40 °C when lipase was added to the wash — a bench result with a purified enzyme rather than a promise about your laundry, but a mechanism worth exploiting.
The hygiene side supports the same conclusion: in the 2025 domestic-laundering trial we unpack in Machine-Washing Reusable Cotton Rounds, a normal 40 °C cycle met the hygienic benchmark, and the one combination that failed it was exactly the gentleness stack most people choose on sensitive-skin grounds — a cool 30 °C wash with non-biological detergent, followed by air drying.
The conditional recommendation, then. Wash at 40 °C (104 °F) with a detergent that contains enzymes if your skin tolerates residue from that detergent class. Go to LastObject's stated ceiling of 60 °C if you want more margin — for example if a set has sat damp. If you must use a fragrance-free, enzyme-free detergent for skin reasons, do not also drop to the coldest setting and air-dry; pick one compromise, not three.
Why the fiber changes the rules
Lyocell is not cotton with a marketing name. Published fiber data puts lyocell's moisture regain at roughly 10–13% against cotton's 7–8%, with tenacity of 30–45 cN/tex against cotton's 19.5–35. Either way it is a stronger fiber that holds more water, and both properties matter here. The higher regain is part of why a 70% lyocell round takes up remover fluid without needing to be soaked, and the higher tenacity is why a woven cellulose round tolerates mechanical laundering at all. Those numbers come from a review's summary tables, i.e. compiled ranges rather than measurements on this specific fabric, so read them as fiber-class properties, not as a spec sheet for LastRound.
The practical consequence: the pad's enemy is not water and it is not agitation. It is chemistry and heat that attack cellulose or the finish on it.
What shortens the life of a set
Bleach. LastObject's refill page rules it out explicitly, and there is no version of this where bleach is worth the risk. The honest statement of the reason is narrower than the confident one you usually hear: no source consulted here measures what repeated oxidative bleaching does to a finished lyocell/cotton round, so the instruction itself is the reason to skip it. What can be said is that bleach is not solving your actual problem. The soil on a used round is oily and pigmented, and shifting it is a detergent job, not a whitening job.
Fabric softener. This is the instruction most people would break without a second thought, and LastObject states the consequence plainly: softener "coats the fibres and reduces absorption." Absorption is the entire point of a 70% lyocell round — a pad that takes up less remover is a pad you end up pressing harder to get the same lift, which is bad for the round and, per the technique guidance below, bad for your face.
Heat above the stated ceiling. LastObject specifies "up to 60 °C." That is a ceiling, not a target. Boiling a cellulose round buys you nothing that a 60 °C machine cycle with detergent has not already delivered, and it removes the one variable you had full control over.
Solvents — with a nuance worth stating honestly. The instruction says no harsh solvents, and the instruction should be followed. But the reason is not the one usually given. Cellulose is chemically inert to acetone: acetone is a documented nonsolvent for cellulose, so nail polish remover does not dissolve a lyocell/cotton round the way it dissolves cellulose acetate. What acetone can do is act on dyes and any finish on the fabric, and — more importantly for the person using it — there is no home wash step that verifiably clears solvent-carried polish residue out of a fiber you intend to put back on your face. The honest framing is: not because the fiber melts, but because you cannot confirm the round came clean.
Friction, indirectly. Both the American Academy of Dermatology's general face-washing guidance and its acne guidance push in the same direction on technique: the AAD advises against scrubbing, stating plainly that scrubbing irritates the skin, and warns against pulling hard on the delicate skin around the eyes. Hard rubbing is hard on your face first and on the round second — a pad worked aggressively against dry makeup abrades faster than one used with enough remover to let the product lift.
Knowing when a set is finished
LastObject's number is approximately 250 wash cycles per pad, which the brand multiplies out to roughly 1,750 single-use rounds replaced over the life of a seven-pad set. That arithmetic is LastObject's own, it assumes one disposable round displaced per use, and no independent published measurement of the service life of a lyocell/cotton makeup round in wash cycles turned up in the sources reviewed for this article. That gap is real and worth stating: the 250 figure is the manufacturer's rating, not an externally verified endurance test.
In practice you will not be counting. Judge by the pad: thinning where you have pressed hardest, edges going ragged, pigment that no longer washes out, or a surface that starts leaving fiber behind on the face. Any of those means retire the round, regardless of the count.
On disposal, LastObject states the rounds are home-compostable at end of life; the refill page's wording is that when the rounds are fully spent, they're home-compostable. As of 18 August 2026, the only certification named anywhere near that claim is OEKO-TEX — a textile certification, not a composting standard. No composting standard, testing house, or certificate number is named on either page. Home composting and industrial composting are separate regimes with separate certification schemes, so a claim about one cannot be inferred from testing under the other, and neither is cited here. Until LastObject publishes what the rounds were tested against, read the compostability as the brand's claim rather than a verified one.
When LastRound is the wrong choice
This section is not a formality. There are situations where a reusable round is the wrong tool and no wash routine fixes it.
Active acne or inflamed skin. The AAD's published acne guidance describes applying products with the fingertips, on the stated grounds that scrubbing with washcloths, sponges, and other tools can irritate the skin. That guidance does not distinguish between disposable cotton and reusable lyocell — as written it covers the whole tool category, including the disposables LastRound competes with.
Active eye or skin infection, and any sharing between people. Between washes, a used round is a stored damp textile. LastObject's instructions describe cleaning it, not disinfecting it to any clinical standard, and none of the sources here test a domestic wash against an eye-infection organism. Where there is an active infection around the eye or on the face, or where two people would otherwise share one set, a disposable round is used once and discarded, which removes the question rather than managing it. This is the clearest case where the disposable wins on the merits, not on convenience.
Nail polish and acetone. Already covered: the instructions rule it out, and a reusable textile is the wrong carrier for a solvent you cannot verify has left the fiber. Something disposable is the better carrier for that job.
Travel without laundry access. Seven rounds and a mesh bag are a system that assumes a washing machine within a reasonable number of days. A week of hotel rooms with no laundry is a genuine weak spot, and the honest answer is that disposables have no maintenance debt at all — that is their real advantage, and it does not disappear because the waste math goes the other way.
Anyone who will not do the wash. Reusables are a behavior, not a material. A set that sits damp in a bathroom is worse than a disposable round, and there is no product design that resolves that.
The precision job is a different tool
Removing makeup across an area and correcting a line are not the same task, and a round is not a good instrument for the second one.
